about

Drop Your Guard is a lamentation of sorts. Or maybe more of an uncomfortable question that I am trying to answer in my own mind as I observe strife in the world. And maybe it is something of a social criticism. Whatever the phrase is that eludes me, this is a song in which I am observing the friction that sparks between people when contrasting ideologies clash. I understand that conflict is simply a reality of life, but I also have an idealistic hope that love can win out in the end. To that end, this song expresses a longing to drop your guard, put down your arms, let your heart breathe.

"Time now to pause and wonder
How we’ve been torn asunder
Long are the years and moments
Lost in between - lost in between"

LYRICS

V1
I hear what you are saying
I’m just a little wary
Of how the words are carried
Behind your teeth

Malice in your translation
Replay the accusations
Until the final phrases
Cut like defeat - cut like defeat

CH
Drop your guard now
Put down your arms
Won’t you let your heart breathe (2x)

V2
So often reenacted
Shadows of darkened habit
Tongue like a hidden dagger
Quick to release

Time now to pause and wonder
How we’ve been torn asunder
Long are the years and moments
Lost in between - lost in between

CH
Drop your guard now
Put down your arms
Won’t you let your heart breathe (2x)

V3
Fury the fire that crumbles
All else reduced to rubble
Gather the poison plunder
Dead at our feet

One flame can flicker forth
Until it ignites a chorus
Destroy the spark that bore it
Ashes to dreams - ashes to dreams

CH
Drop your guard now
Put down your arms
Won’t you let your heart breathe (4x)
